What is an Expert Witness?
An expert witness is an individual with particular knowledge or expertise beyond that to be expected of a layman. An expert witness is hired to provide the Court with an objective explanation on a particular matter.
Dr. Graham may be hired to educate the Court on complicated mental health matters at it relates to the particular legal question at hand. Dr. Graham has specific expertise in:
- Sexually Violent Predator Legislation
- Violence Risk Assessment
- Criminal Responsibility
- Malingering
Consultation
The Purpose
Legal cases involving psychological issues or mental health defenses can become complicated to attorneys on either side of the case. The goal of hiring a psychological consultant is to assist in making those complex cases more manageable.
The Process
- We would meet by phone or in-person to initially discuss the case
- I would likely conduct a file review of all relevant materials
- I may explain the psychological concepts related to the case
- I would provide an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the case
- I would provide a realistic direction to pursue in the matter
- I could assist in preparing direct and cross-examination questions
